The assignment: three breaks, three completely different problems

The World Surf League doesn't run events in convention centers. They run them on sand, at the mercy of tide charts, in places chosen for waves — not for fiber access. Across the tour I've stood up competition networks at three of the most iconic breaks in the sport: the US Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, the Pipe Pro at Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore, and Lower Trestles outside San Clemente. Same league, same scoring systems, same broadcast requirements — and three utterly different RF problems.

Huntington Beach: the world's largest surf competition

The US Open of Surfing is nine days of competition and festival on the south side of the Huntington Beach pier — free to attend, which is why organizers estimated more than 400,000 visitors across the week last year. Hundreds of the world's best surfers compete across the WSL Challenger Series and Longboard Tour divisions, and around them grows a temporary city: vendor villages, sponsor activations, broadcast compounds, and athlete areas.

The part nobody sees: a large fleet of point-of-sale devices spread across multiple vendor zones, every one of them requiring PCI compliance. That means payment traffic rides its own segmented SSIDs and VLANs with QoS priority — isolated from the public, isolated from broadcast, auditable end to end. A dropped Instagram upload is a shrug; a dropped card transaction at a 400,000-person event is money on the floor. You design for the transaction first.

And above all of it sits the traffic that genuinely cannot fail: real-time judging and scoring. Every wave scored, every heat timed, every result pushed live to the broadcast and the app — riding RF that I designed, on a beach, in a crowd the size of a city.

Pipeline: scoring the world's most dangerous wave

The Pipe Pro happens in Hawaiian winter on the North Shore of Oahu, where the Banzai Pipeline breaks over shallow reef a few dozen yards off the sand. There's no festival city here — just the sport's most consequential wave, a broadcast compound, and judges who need the same real-time scoring infrastructure working flawlessly at the edge of the Pacific. Remote shoreline, salt air, weather that changes by the hour: the network still has to behave like it's in a data center.

Trestles: lighting up the 2028 Olympic venue

Lower Trestles is the break the surfing world reveres and infrastructure forgot — part of San Onofre State Beach, famously reachable only by a long walk down a dirt trail, with nothing waiting for you at the bottom. We lit up that remote stretch of coast for WSL competition anyway: backhaul in, coverage up, judging and broadcast live, competition-grade Wi-Fi where there was nothing.

That location is about to matter to a lot more people: Lower Trestles is the official surfing venue for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. When the world shows up to that beach expecting flawless connectivity, it won't be new territory for me — I've already deployed competition-quality wireless at Trestles, successfully, under live-event pressure.

The field lesson

Event Wi-Fi isn't one network — it's five or six networks wearing one set of radios, separated by discipline: segmentation, priority, and a design that assumes the crowd, the weather, and the venue will all try to break it. Sand, salt, no conduit, no second chances while the broadcast is live. That's the job. If your event runs on RF someone else designed, make sure they've done it where failure wasn't an option.
