Wireless Field Day 8. I’m in!

I got a really great email yesterday from a man named Stevphn Foskett. It was to let me know that I had been selected as a delegate for an event called Wireless Field Day.

I stood quietly up from my chair at a restaurant and proceeded to do a little dance right beside the table. I’m not kidding, and I do have a witness, I’m pretty sure everyone was staring at me wondering what I was doing, but they all knew the same thing that I did: this guys pretty excited.

Wireless field day is one of a series of Tech Field Day events and the brainchild of Gestalt IT, an IT consulting firm. The leading vendors in a specific industry, in this case the wireless industry, are contacted and asked to put their best foot forward for a group of hand selected, influential, and very active members of the Internet community.

From the Tech Field Day site:

We provide a valuable forum for engagement, education, hands-on experience, and feedback for vendors. And the attendees get access to the best information, high quality resources that lead to informed, more nuanced discussion about the marketplace.

So far the announced vendors we will be visiting are:

It is not uncommon to see the CTO’s, founders, and main nerds behind some of the most advanced technology in Silicon Valley standing in front of the room of delegates.
After they’re done doing the dog and pony show about what they’re doing, where they’re going, and a brief peek into their road map, the delegates open fire.

One of the things that makes the Tech Field Day events fantastic is the “no holds barred” attitude that the delegates have when dealing with some of the highest level executives at some of these technology firms.

For a few hours on one day, all nerds are equal in the room and that makes way for some exciting conversations, some tough questions, and some memorable moments where vendors and community members are put on the spot. The result of this is an unprecedented look into what is shaping our industry. Just as important is the ability for vendors to get important feedback from a community of delegates that not only talk about the products online, but use them for some of the most spectacular deployments and projects in the world.

My fellow delegates and I (that sounds so awesome to say) take pride in the fact that we don’t just sit around talking about technology or poking at the vendors because we can, we deploy the stuff.
This is what puts food on our tables as it does for so many other consultants, integrators, & system admins. We all take being a delegate very seriously and we know that we’re there to ask the questions that everyone has, but no one knows the right person to ask.

I can’t tell you how awesome this opportunity is for me and everyone else chosen to be a delegate. It’s always great to feel like you represent something bigger than just you, in this case we hope to properly represent the entire industry.

Obviously I’m a little excited about this, and I know that I’m going to have some fun things, and probably some controversial things, to contribute to Wireless Field Day 8. Stephen, Tom, and the rest of the crew at Gestalt, thank you so much for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to seeing you guys in San Jose!
